Kamau Campbell, a talented football player, devoted son, and loving brother, was gunned down just before 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, near the 3900 block of Hollins Ferry Road, according to Baltimore County Police.
Officers initially responded to reports of a shooting in a shopping center parking lot near the school, but when they arrived, they found Campbell collapsed outside the school, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
In the aftermath, the school was placed on lockdown, and parents were directed to a separate lot as police secured the scene.
Detectives have since questioned multiple people, but no homicide charges have been filed as of Thursday, March 6, and police say the investigation remains ongoing.
Campbell’s family is now left to grieve the painful and sudden loss of the 16-year-old whose life "was senselessly and horrifically taken due to gun violence, leaving our hearts shattered," his uncle, DeWayne G said.
"Kamau, affectionately known as ‘Daddy,’ was full of jokes, sarcasm, and a spirit that lit up every room," his uncle said.
"He was the heart of our family—deeply connected to his sisters and brothers, always looking out for them, sharing laughs, and creating unforgettable memories.
A GoFundMe campaign was created to help his family through this tragedy, covering funeral costs and providing support as they process their loss.
Donations can be made here.
"Due to this unexpected loss at such a young age, we are asking for help to cover funeral expenses and support our grieving family," organizers of the fundraiser wrote.
"Any donation, no matter the amount, would mean the world to us."
His family is pleading for answers, and police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Baltimore County Police at 410-307-2020.
